Leadership development is not reserved for managers, and a strong leadership pipeline does not start with job titles. It starts when you intentionally notice the people who take ownership, answer questions for others, and raise the standard without being asked. That “leader without a title” is often your most influential teammate, especially in a service business where culture is built in a thousand daily moments. A structured staff leadership development program also becomes a retention tool: people stay where they feel seen, challenged, and invested in.
A practical way to turn leadership development into something repeatable is to design it as a cohort with clear expectations. Thrive’s approach uses peer nomination from current leaders, followed by a personal invitation that spells out the commitment up front. The group stays small, typically six to eight people, to protect discussion time. The program runs nine months, meeting every other week for 60 to 90 minutes, with dates set in advance so attendees know this is a program we take seriously. The structure matters because consistency builds trust and momentum. Just as important, participants can opt in or opt out, because forced “growth” rarely produces real growth.
The curriculum blends culture, leadership, and practical workplace skills. Early sessions focus on building the container: confidentiality, respect, and the expectation that the room is not hangout time. From there, the group explores topics like company core values and leadership values, mindset and communication, vulnerability, courage, and clear language for building trust. Add in discussions about having tough conversations why leaders ask great questions, and priority and time management to create a balanced leadership skills toolkit. The method is meant to serve as a guided discussion, allowing space to assess real scenarios that are happening on the company floor so developing leaders can serve as ambassadors who reflect what the broader team is experiencing. The result is leadership training that improves decision-making today and shapes better humans for the long term.
